Position Description and Candidate Profile:

Accountable to the Board, the President and CEO is responsible for the achievement of the mission, vision and strategic priorities of the National Association through the effective deployment of human and monetary resources.  The President and CEO is responsible for the effective administration of the Association partnerships through its Secretariat mandate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide executive leadership and strategic direction to Supply Chain Canada, direct the senior management team and oversee the overall day-to-day operations of the Association;
  • Facilitate the development of a mission, vision and strategic plan for the Association, together with other planning or strategy documents as required;
  • Oversee the Association’s financial and human resources;
  • Maintain an understanding of current and future issues that may impact members and their employers;
  • Keep membership apprised of priorities and critical issues affecting their profession;
  • Ensure that policy positions developed by Supply Chain Canada are aligned with member priorities;
  • Establish and maintain mechanisms to attract new members and ensure continued engagement with current members;
  • Lead Supply Chain Canada in achieving organizational excellence and member satisfaction;
  • Ensure the statutory requirements of the Association are fulfilled;
  • Maintain an effective accountability relationship with the institute partners;
  • Manage the resources of the organization in accordance with the policies and limitations established by the Board of Directors
  • Facilitate the recruitment and orientation of new Board members;
  • Facilitate the effective governance of the Association;
  • Assess and report on progress against the Association’s strategic priorities;
  • Pursue outreach, communications and networking activities to strengthen the Association’s profile, its value proposition and its credibility with all stakeholders;
  • Seek out partnership opportunities with complementary organizations;
  • Act as a spokesperson and champion for the Association; and
  • Represent the Association within the international community, in particular as the representative to the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management.

 First Year Priorities:

The first twelve months will be of critical importance as the new CEO develops an in-depth appreciation of the vision, mission and mandate of Supply Chain Canada.  Establishing a good working relationship with members and stakeholders will allow for effective management of time and resources through the setting of goals.  Integrating and gaining credibility with members and staff, nationally, regionally and internationally, will be crucial for success. 

In the first year, the new CEO will address a number of priorities.  The following important activities/issues will require particular attention:

Through discussions with the Board, staff, members, volunteers and other stakeholders, develop an in-depth understanding of Supply Chain Canada, its mandate, history, structure and activities – assessing the opportunities and challenges which lie ahead.

  • Ensure a shared understanding of the role and contribution of Supply Chain Canada.
  • Develop cohesive working relationships with key partners and stakeholders; including the Supply Chain Canada Board, Provincial Institutes, Employers; and Members.
  • Ensure focus and goal setting. This includes regular assessments of all program initiatives; streamlining/aligning resources to achieve agreed priorities and ensuring the development and execution of a new strategic plan.
  • Development of mechanisms for improved accountability, metrics, and reporting as applicable to stakeholders within the Supply Chain Canada ecosystem.
  • Maintain an organizational culture that is collaborative, energized, nimble and innovative.
  • Build on the momentum gained as a national recognized voice for the supply chain management profession.

 Candidate Qualifications:

Supply Chain Canada seeks an outstanding leader with demonstrated capacity for leading a complex organization, within a national and international context. Ideally s/he will be an experienced executive in association management with a track record of accomplishment.  A compelling communicator/relationship builder, they have experience achieving results through others.  Other qualities include a practical ability to get things done, superior communication skills, a high energy level and a demonstrated ability to initiate and manage change and growth. 

 The successful candidate will ideally possess a combination of the following background and experience:

  • Proven leadership at the senior level within a private, public and/or non-profit setting, high business acumen gained ideally from experience in both the private and not for profit sector;
  • The ability to work with others in building a compelling vision for their organization; openness to new avenues and ideas; the communication skills needed to achieve support for that vision; and the strategic/management skills to make that vision a reality;
  • At ease cultivating relationships with diverse constituencies and building support for key initiatives; understanding how associations operate;
  • High degree of financial literacy and business aptitude. Extensive experience with setting organizational goals, measuring performance and establishing a high performance culture;
  • An active and effective delegator who recognizes, nurtures and utilizes the talents of all staff; a visible presence in all parts of the organization; perceived as accessible to members and stakeholders;
  • Government relations experience would be an asset;
  • Experience working with a Board; building effective working relationships in order to best execute on strategic initiatives;
  • Comfort level in a public setting; ability to build consensus around priority objectives; strong presence as a public speaker; and
  • Knowledge of the supply chain management sector would be a strong asset.
  • Ability to communicate in both official languages would be considered an asset.
